DigUp is an open-source desktop semantic search application that finds local files across text, images, audio, and video using an on-device machine learning model.
Current versions: 0.6.1 for Mac, 0.7.0-beta.1 (beta) for Windows and Linux; checked against DigUp's GitHub releases on October 15, 2026.
This FAQ answers common questions about DigUp, its privacy model, file indexing, and platform requirements.

Questions
Is DigUp free?
Yes. DigUp is free and open source under the MIT license, and the project documentation states that it stays that way.
Does DigUp send my files anywhere?
No. Nothing you index leaves your computer. DigUp connects to the internet only to download the model once and to check for updates once a day, which sends nothing about your files and can be disabled in Settings. There is no account and no telemetry.
Does DigUp work offline?
DigUp requires an internet connection once to download the 865 MB model files. After that initial download, file indexing and search run locally on your computer, with the only optional network activity being a daily update check that can be turned off.
Is DigUp safe to install?
DigUp is open-source software available on GitHub, meaning its source code can be publicly inspected. The app only reads your chosen files and never changes, moves, or uploads them. Note that the Windows installer is not digitally signed yet, so you should only download release files from DigUp's GitHub Releases page.
Does DigUp work on Intel Macs?
No. The Mac application requires an Apple Silicon Mac running macOS 14 or later. Intel-based Macs are not supported.
What is different on Windows and Linux?
The underlying search engine and search results are identical to the Mac version. However, text inside screenshots is not read yet on Windows and Linux, and older Word .doc files, RAW photos, and SVG images are only indexed on macOS.
Will DigUp slow my computer down?
Only the first indexing pass is resource-intensive, after which DigUp reads new files only. The model runs inside a separate helper process that quits when indexing finishes, and the search component loads only while you actively search.
Which languages does DigUp support?
The underlying EmbeddingGemma 2 model understands more than 100 languages, allowing search queries across different languages. However, text inside screenshots is read only on macOS using system text recognition for about 25 languages, and languages written without spaces (such as Chinese, Japanese, and Thai) are not split into distinct exact words.
How big is DigUp?
The EmbeddingGemma 2 model download is 865 MB (composed of a 310 MB text model and 555 MB image and audio encoders). The application package itself is approximately 20 MB on macOS, and between 40 MB and 140 MB on Windows and Linux depending on the package type.
Is this site the official DigUp website?
No. This site is an independent, unofficial informational guide. It is not created by, affiliated with, or endorsed by DigUp's developer, Google, Apple, or Microsoft. The official project repository is located at github.com/ARahim3/DigUp.
