DigUp vs Other Search Tools

DigUp searches files by what they show or say and jumps to the exact page or moment, working side by side with built-in search tools like Spotlight and Windows Search.

Current versions: 0.6.1 for Mac, 0.7.0-beta.1 (beta) for Windows and Linux; checked against DigUp's GitHub releases on October 15, 2026.

DigUp works alongside desktop utilities rather than replacing standard file finders. While traditional indexers locate files by file names, text and metadata, DigUp reads audio, video, pictures and documents using EmbeddingGemma 2 to match what items show or say.

Spotlight on macOS and Windows Search on Windows find files by their names, text and metadata. DigUp also finds files by what they show or say, and takes you to the specific page or moment in the file. Both built-in indexers work fine side by side with DigUp. For detailed platform behavior on macOS, see the DigUp vs Spotlight comparison.

Third-Party File Search Utilities

Other standalone search tools focus on different search methods. For Windows users looking at filename-based utilities, read the DigUp vs Everything guide to see how the two approaches compare.

Platform Availability

DigUp runs on macOS, Windows and Linux. The Mac app is a stable release requiring an Apple Silicon Mac with macOS 14 or later. Windows and Linux builds are currently a beta release (version 0.7.0-beta.1). Windows requires 64-bit Windows 10 or 11. Linux packages support 64-bit Intel and AMD processors.

Questions

Can I use DigUp alongside Spotlight or Windows Search?

Yes. Spotlight and Windows Search find files by their names, text and metadata, while DigUp also finds them by what they show or say. They work fine side by side on your computer.

How does DigUp differ from traditional desktop search tools?

Traditional search tools locate files by matching names, metadata or text strings. DigUp embeds images, audio, video and text into a shared vector space, allowing searches by description, exact words and specific moments.

Are all DigUp features available on Windows and Linux?

Search results use the same model across systems, but Windows and Linux are currently in beta. Text inside screenshots is not read on Windows or Linux yet, and old Word .doc files, RAW photos and SVG pictures are only read on a Mac.
